THE ESSAY
Episode 01 is a single long-form argument in four movements: who pays for a republic, who fights for it, and who decides both. It opens with the tariff ledger of 1861, follows the muster rolls into the ninety-day war, sits in the deciding rooms where secession and war were voted, and closes on the reckoning — the count that never stopped.

THE PREMISE
A republic is usually described in ink — constitutions, debates, flags. But in 1861 it was also a set of numbers: duties collected at ports, men enrolled for ninety days, acres planted, days remaining. The premise of this episode is simple: read the numbers first, and the politics rereads itself.
THE ARGUMENT
Whoever pays sets the terms. Whoever fights pays in a different currency, and is rarely the one who signed the bill. Whoever decides writes the total. Resistance — the refusal to sign the ledger — is not chaos but arithmetic: a subtraction the republic was forced to carry, and the argument the whole series will pursue.
