SHOW NOTES / FIELD NOTES
NOTES
THE TARIFF LEDGER
Duties, iron, wool, and the Morrill Tariff — the fiscal architecture that made secession feel like arithmetic before it ever felt like war.
THE MUSTER ROLLS
Volunteers, bounties, substitutes, and conscription — the ledger of bodies, and who was counted willing.
THE DECIDING ROOM
Chambers, ballots, and pens — the small rooms where the large decisions were made, without the people who would pay for them.
THE ARITHMETIC
Sources, sums, and surviving ledgers — how a long-form essay reconstructs a reckoning from the numbers that outlived the men.
HOW THE SHOW IS MADE
SOURCES
Period ledgers, muster rolls, congressional records, letters. Every number in the essay is read from the surviving paper — never from memory.
ESSAY
A single voice, written long. Forty-two minutes is one argument — cut so that each chapter closes a door the next one opens.
SOUND
Score, field recordings, and room tone from the archive. Silence is mixed as deliberately as the voice.
CUT
Three passes: fact, rhythm, mercy. If a sentence survives all three, it airs.
TRANSCRIPT
Every episode ships with a full annotated transcript — the essay and its sources, side by side.
